Born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1959 and lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.
Luiz Zerbini develops an exploratory approach to painting, combining attention to the political and ecological issues of the Global South with the meticulous execution of textures, patterns, and figures. By depicting foliage, forests, and dense vegetal networks, the artist emphasizes the observation of nature and translates the interactions of ecosystems into pictorial language. Zerbini’s militant stance is particularly rooted in the Brazilian situation, as the artist critically revisits national art history, from landscape painting to historical representations of collective identity. Through the dynamic distribution of visual information across the canvas, his compositions immerse the viewer in a hypnotic atmosphere. Tension, coexistence, layering, and proliferation are some of the principles that govern his process, forming a system of relationships in his paintings and monotypes.
Zerbini has works in important public collections, such as Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris, France; Instituto Inhotim, Brumadinho, Brazil; Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil; Fondazione Sandretto re Rebaundengo per l’Arte, Turin, Italy; MAM – Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil; MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, São Paulo, Brazil; MAM – Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Kistefos Museum, Jevnaker, Norway; Instituto Itaú Cultural, São Paulo, Brazil and Pizzuti Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio, USA.
