
Born in Tokyo in 1972 and lives and works in Tokyo.
Photographer, Film Director, Contemporary Artist.
Primarily focusing on photography, Mika Ninagawa also extensively works in film, video, and spatial expression. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious Kimura Ihei Photography Award. In 2010, she published a photo book through Rizzoli in New York. As a film director, she has directed five feature films to date, including “Helter Skelter” (2012) and “Diner” (2019), as well as the Netflix original series “Followers” (2020).
In recent years, she has expanded her range of expression under the moniker “Mika Ninagawa with EiM,” collaborating with the creative team EiM to produce large-scale installations.
She continues to dynamically present her work both in Japan and internationally, having published over 120 photo books and held more than 150 solo exhibitions and 130 group exhibitions to date. Her solo exhibition “Mika Ninagawa with EiM: Lights of the beyond, Shadow of this world ,” held at the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art from January to March 2025, attracted 250,000 visitors.
Her latest photo books include “VIRA” (bookshop M Co., Ltd., 2026) and “mirror, mirror, mirror” (Mitsumura Suiko Shoin, 2026).
EiM (Eternity in a Moment)
Creative Team
EiM is a creative team formed by scientist and artistic director Hiroaki Miyata, production designer ENZO, creative director Isao Kuwana, lighting director Koshiro Ueno, and others. The team works by assembling a diverse lineup of members for each project.
Major exhibitions that the team has been involved with include Mika Ninagawa: The Butterfly Journey Embracing Lights (Appi Art Project, 2022), Mika Ninagawa: After glow/Eternity in a Moment (Tomio Koyama Gallery Maebashi, 2023), Mika Ninagawa: Eternity in a Moment (TOKYO NODE, 2023-2024), NINAGAWA Mika with EiM: Where Humanity Meets Nature (Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art, 2024), Dreams of the Beyond in the Abyss (Forest Festival of the Arts Okayama, Makido Cave, 2024) , NINAGAWA Mika with EiM:Lights of the beyond, Shadows of this world(Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, 2025), and Immersive theater “The Six Shadows”(Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, 2026)
