Born in Aotearoa, New Zealand in 1985 and lives and works in Sydney, Australia.
Mike Hewson is a Sydney-based artist with a background in structural engineering and
heavy-civil construction. His award-winning public art projects and installations frequent an adaptive, imaginative approach to the reuse of discarded materials. These spaces are distinctly social, offering opportunities for community-building through shared experiences of making, gathering, and play.
Hewson’s public art commissions include Coal Loader Palm Grove, Blackwattle Bay, Sydney (2026); Rocks on Wheels, Southbank, Melbourne (2022); Pockets Park, Leichhardt, Sydney (2022); and St Peters Fences, St Peters, Sydney (2020).
Recent solo exhibitions include Installations at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Sydney Contemporary, Sydney (2026); The Opera House Table at Gallery Twenty Twenty, Sydney (2026); The Key’s Under the Mat at the Art Gallery of New South Wales,
Sydney (2025–26); Geopets at Lett Thomas, Sydney Contemporary, Sydney (2025); and Fountains at Lett Thomas, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland (2024).
Hewson received a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of Canterbury, Aotearoa New Zealand, in 2007 and a Master of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) from Columbia University, New York, in 2016.
