Born in Tokyo and lives and works in Tokyo.
Sputniko! is a British–Japanese artist whose practice playfully yet provocatively explores the intersection of technology, identity, and society. Working across film, robotics, music, and interactive installation, she interrogates social norms and speculates on the ethical and cultural implications of emerging technologies — from reproductive biotechnologies to genetic engineering and AI.
Her works are held in the permanent collections of M+ (Hong Kong), the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. She has exhibited internationally at major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Centre Pompidou-Metz (France), Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (New York), and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
From 2013 to 2017, she was an Assistant Professor at the MIT Media Lab, where she founded and directed the Design Fiction Group, developing a body of speculative work that bridges artistic practice and technological research. She subsequently served as Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo and at Tokyo University of the Arts, where she is currently a Guest Professor.
