Echoes in the Mountains (2024) is a large-scale sculpture standing 6.5 metres tall, inspired by the crested kingfisher-a bird that symbolizes the rich natural environment of Kagamino. Inhabiting mountain streams, the crested kingfisher has been designated the official bird of Kagamino Town (formerly the village of Tomison), whose habitat is recognized as a Natural Monument by Okayama Prefecture.
Inside the sculpture, the artist planted a kobushi tree (Magnolia kobus), which grows abundantly throughout the region. As the tree grows, the work will gradually become more integrated with the surrounding environment. While quietly blending into its setting, the work allows us to hear the enduring voice of nature—a voice that should be heard and remembered by the residents of Kagamino as well as visitors to the town.
Originally created for Forest Festival of the Arts Okayama 2024, this work now remains on long-term installation.

Born in Taipei in 1972. Graduated from Taipei National University of Arts in 1996. Chien-Chung Liao mainly applies carpentry techniques, which he obtained by studying woodwork, to his artistic work. With exquisite craftsman₋ship, he vividly simulates machines and vehicles often seen in the city, exploring the ambiguous relationship between the simulations and the real objects. The audience experiences the process of realizing that what appears to be real is in fact an elaborate imitation. With this process, the artist hopes to stimulate people to rethink the environment they have taken for granted and to evoke viewers’ personal stories and the social implications that underlie the subjects.
