Hideaki Kawashima was born in Aichi Prefecture in 1969.
After graduating from Tokyo Zokei University in 1991, he underwent Buddhist training at the temple of Enryaku-ji for a period of two years beginning in 1995. In 2001, he commenced activities of artistic production. From the start of his production, he has constantly confronted the self-consciousness, and continued to depict faces and the subtle, complex emotions appearing on them. When people view his works, they are mesmerized by the exquisite gradations of color faintly applied, and the beguiling eyes and facial expressions projecting strength at some times and sadness at others. They end up being deeply moved by the feeling that the works are connected with themselves in some ways.
Thus far, Kawashima has showed works at numerous exhibitions inside and outside Japan. His major solo exhibitions include Stay Still (Richard Heller Gallery, United States, 2023), youth (Tomio Koyama Gallery, 2018), and Wandering (Kukje Gallery, Republic of Korea, 2009). The major group exhibitions where he has shown works include Japanese Experience Inevitable (Museum der Moderne am Mönchsberg, Salzburg, Austria, 2004), Life (Art Tower Mito, 2006), Idol! Yokohama Museum of Art, 2006), and Little Boy (curation by Takashi Murakami, Japan Society, New York, 2006).
