Moe Kato was born in the city of Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture in 1988.
In 2014, she graduated with a master’s degree (Ph.D.) from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, where she majored in lacquer art. At the university, she studied mainly mother-of-pearl work and dry lacquer techniques. In September 2014, she moved to the city of Niimi in Okayama Prefecture and began producing works.
She has participated mainly in the following group exhibitions: Urushi New wave in Tokyo: An Exhibition by 7 Lacquer Artists (Heisei Kinen Bijutsukan Gallery, Tokyo, 2019); Mori no shizumaru (The forest grows quiet), a special project pairing Yasuyuki Katayama and Moe Kato to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the museum’s opening (Niimi Museum of Art, Okayama, 2021); and the Tenpla Selection 100th Anniversary Exhibition, Kako he no henshin, mirai (Replies to the past, future), (Tenjinyama Cultural Plaza of Okayama Prefecture, Okayama, 2023). Her solo exhibitions include Yumeji wo mite ita nekotachi (Cats that were looking at Yumeji), (Yumeji Art Museum & Shonen Sanso, Okayama, 2021). The major awards she has received are as follows: Silver Prize, Art Division, International Urushi Exhibition Ishikawa 2020, and Second Prize, 22nd Okayama Art and Culture Awards (2021).
